Because I’m sure we can agree that the melting make-up look is not hot
We’re in the middle of a major heatwave – a level 4 heatwave to be exact. Thankfully the temperature is dropping tomorrow, but only in the high twenties and low thirties – it’s still going to be hot. This means that makeup runs a serious risk of slipping off the face. Makeup Specialist at FalseEyelashes.co.uk, Saffron Hughesgive us the lowdown on how to keep your makeup on in the heat.
1. Make sure your moisturizer and SPF are oil-free
As always with makeup, preparation really starts with your skincare routine. “On a hot day, use an oil-free moisturizer as it’s less likely to leave your face feeling greasy throughout the day,” advises Hughes. “You should, of course, also apply a face sunscreen 30 or higher under your makeup to ensure it’s properly protected from the sun.”
Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel-Cream, £28.50 | Fantastic look
The oil-free version of the brand’s iconic bestseller facial moisturizer is perfect in this heat. It is also a gel-cream that is cooler on the skin. Keep it in the fridge overnight and it will feel even better when applied to warm skin.
2. Apply the best primer to keep your makeup from slipping
We know many of you skip using a primer as it’s one more step to add to your regimen, but it’s key for warmer temperatures. “They create a sticky base that your foundation and other face base products can adhere to,” says Hughes. “Plus, they can fill your pores, hydrate your skin and give you a glowing complexion – all of which will mean you need less foundation.
3. Stay away from shiny foundation products and apply light layers at a time
Chances are, you’re already looking a little brighter than normal in this heat. Using any product with a shiny finish is a big no-no because they will make you look sweatier. “Choose a matte foundation that’s formulated without mineral oil or petroleum jelly,” advises Hughes. “This makes your face less susceptible to wrinkling during the day. If the foundation is too heavy, you could opt for a matte CC cream.’
Be careful with applying too much base product. Not only will this prevent your makeup from looking cakey, but heavy layers of foundation won’t allow your skin to breathe and could make you feel hotter.
4. Skip powder-based products
“Powder can tend to look cakey on a hot day,” warns Hughes. Who recommends removing it all together in this heat and using cream or liquid formulas. This includes foundations, blushes, bronzers and even eyeshadows.
“People’s skin tends to have less moisture in the warmer months because it’s more dehydrated, so it’s also important to choose products with moisturizing ingredients. For example, look for products with ingredients like jojoba oil, coconut oil and hyaluronic acid.’
Maybelline Cheek Heat Sheer Blusher, £8.99 | Fantastic look
Cream textures mimic the look of skin much better than powder-based products, so if you like that natural look, these Maybelline blushes will help you get there. A little goes a long way, so stay light and get the look you want.
5. Always finish your foundation with a skin-soothing face mist
Using one of the best face mists to set your makeup is always a good idea in this weather. Skin is more dehydrated when it’s warmer, so the mist keeps your makeup from slipping and sliding all over the place, as well as giving skin a much-needed boost of hydration.
6. Stick to moisturizing lip formulas so you don’t have to top it up as much
“If you’re used to matte lipsticks but want something more hydrating for summer, a satin finish is a perfect choice as the formula sits somewhere between matte and cream,” says Hughes. “However, it’s not as glossy as a cream finish, so you won’t be shocked by the change in formula after application. Plus, it’s the perfect summer formula for a number of reasons. First, the subtle shimmer makes the imperfection less noticeable, so you won’t need to fill it in as much. They’re also less likely to slip as much as a cream or sheer formula.”
Hughes also recommends lip oils as they are rich in nutrients like jojoba and shea oil, which actually make them more moisturizing than your everyday lip balm.
7. Make sure your mascara is waterproof
The best waterproof mascara is a must have the summer. Even if you’re not planning a dip in the pool or beach, waterproof formulas last longer and won’t end up on your cheeks by noon. “Humidity can cause mascara to smudge everywhere, however, waterproof formulas are less likely to do this,” explains Hughes.

Our favorite Senior Beauty Editor mascara comes in a waterproof formula. “This mascara is amazing and I used to worry that in the summer I would have to use something else. But no, the Maybelline gods heard my prayers.’
8. Stop touching your face throughout the day
“Not only can touching your face too much transfer bacteria from your hands to your face, but with every touch, you’re removing makeup from your face,” warns Hughes. “This is because your warm hands (from the sun) break down the products, causing your face to stick during the day.”
